Farm supplying Poblano peppers for Nestle’s new Lean Cuisine frozen food line.

On Oct. 7, 2015th GC Farms was featured on the “Made in America” segment of David Muir’s “ABC World News Tonight” television broadcast. The segment highlighted Nestle’s new line of Lean Cuisine frozen dinners, which launched as a response to evolving market demands with customers seeking higher protein content, gluten free and organic options. But Nestle went further than most food manufacturers in responding to consumer trends. The food manufacturer also decided to have the new food line directly support our American economy by sourcing ingredients from American growers.

To learn more about how Lean Cuisine’s new frozen food line is supporting American agriculture, Muir’s team decided to investigate the point of origin of one of the key ingredients in the Cheese and Bean Enchilada Verde – the poblano peppers. Traced back to Morgan Hill’s very own GC Farms, Muir’s team visited one of GC Farms’ processing facilities as well as the fields where the Chialas grow their poblano peppers and spoke with Tim Chiala. When asked about how he felt when seeing the Lean Cuisine Cheese and Bean Enchilada Verde label for the first time, Chiala smiled: “I was the most excited person in the frozen food aisle.”

Since its debut, the new Lean Cuisine frozen food line has been so successful that the company has added 250 new jobs to keep up with demand – a win-win formula for Nestle as well as American farmers like the Chialas. As Muir surmised at the close of the segment: “A recipe with three words in mind. Made in America!”
